Mile

What Is a Mile?
A mile (symbol: mi) is a length unit in the Imperial and U.S. customary systems. One statute mile equals exactly 5 280 feet, 1 760 yards, or 1 609.344 meters.

Ursprung
The term “mile” derives from the Latin mille passus (“thousand paces”). In 1593 England standardized it at 8 furlongs (5 280 ft) to align with agricultural measures. Variants like the Roman mile (5 000 ft), nautical mile (1 852 m), and others remain in specific contexts.

Today’s Use
Miles are still the standard for road distances and speed limits in the U.S., U.K., and a few other countries. They also appear in aviation (statute miles) alongside nautical miles at sea and in the air.

Kilometer

What Is a Kilometer?
A kilometer (symbol: km) is an SI unit of distance equal to 1 000 meters. In everyday terms, one kilometer is about 0.6214 miles.

Ursprung
The prefix kilo- means “thousand.” As the metric system evolved, the kilometer naturally became the 1 000× multiple of the meter, which today is defined by the distance light travels in 1/299 792 458 of a second. That relationship remains fixed: 1 km = 1 000 m.

Today’s Use
Kilometers are the global standard for expressing land distances—on road signs, maps, and in athletics. While most of the world uses kilometers, miles persist in the U.S., Liberia, Myanmar, and U.K. road systems.
