接頭辞 ミリ (ラテン語 ミル, “thousand”) denotes a factor of 10⁻³ in the metric system. While the meter itself was once defined by a physical platinum-iridium bar, today the meter—and therefore the millimeter—is tied to the fixed speed of light. Despite these shifts, the proportional relationship (1 mm = 0.001 m) has remained constant.

現代の使用
エンジニアリングの公差、技術図面、機械加工部品、紙のサイズ、地図の目盛りなど、ミリメートルは、微細な精度が必要とされるところではどこにでもある。

定義
インチ（英: inch、記号: in）は、帝国および米国の慣習法における長さの単位である。1959年以来、1インチは正確に25.4mmである。1フィートには12インチ、1ヤードには36インチが含まれる。

起源
ラテン語に由来する ウンシア (「12分の1」)、初期のインチの定義には、3本の大麦の角を端から端まで並べたもの、または親指3本の平均幅が含まれていた。最終的には、国際的なヤードに統一された。

現代の使用
米国、カナダ、英国では、建築、木工、ハードウェアの寸法、電子ディスプレイの寸法（画面の対角線など）は、依然としてインチが標準である。
