Convert liters to quarts
Liter
Definición
A liter (L) is a widely used volume measure recognized for use with the International System of Units (SI), though it is technically a non-SI unit. It equals 1 cubic decimeter (1 dm³), which is the same as 1 000 cubic centimeters (1 000 cm³) o 0.001 cubic meters (0.001 m³).
Historia y origen
Between 1901 and 1964, the liter was originally tied to the mass of one kilogram of pure water at its densest point. Variations in water’s temperature, pressure, purity, and the slight discrepancy of the kilogram prototype led to restoring the simpler, volumetric definition: exactly one cubic decimeter.
Uso moderno
Liters measure beverage bottles, fuel at the pump, and container capacities worldwide. They also describe the interior volumes of appliances, the load volumes of backpacks and trunks, and many industrial and household applications where moderate volumes are involved.
Quart (U.S.)
Definición
The U.S. quart (qt US) is a customary volume unit equal to ¼ of a U.S. liquid gallon. One liquid quart amounts to approximately 0.946352946 L, while a dry quart equals about 1.101221 L. In both the U.S. and U.K., the quart is exactly one-quarter of its respective gallon, though the sizes differ.
Historia y origen
Derived from the gallon—whose size varied by commodity and region—the U.S. quart traces back to the English wine gallon. The British retained that measure until redefining their “imperial quart” in 1824. Today’s U.S. quart remains anchored to that earlier wine-gallon standard.
Uso moderno
In the United States, liquid quarts appear on milk cartons, ice cream containers, and recipe books. Though the U.K. still recognizes the imperial quart culturally, metrication has largely shifted official volumes there to liters and milliliters.
