Kilogram
Overview
The kilogram (kg) is the SI’s principal unit of mass. Since May 2019, it’s defined by assigning an exact value to Planck’s constant (h = 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s), with the metre and second linked to the speed of light and cesium-133 transition. Although the reference framework changed, the kilogram’s actual mass remains unchanged.
Orígenes
The term “kilogram” comes from the French kilogramme—combining Greek kilo- (“thousand”) with Latin gramma (“small weight”). Initially (1794), it corresponded to the mass of one litre of water at 0 °C. Later, a platinum-iridium cylinder served as the international standard until small drifts led to today’s constants-based definition.
Uso moderno
As the global base unit for mass, kilograms are used in virtually every domain: science, industry, trade, and everyday life. Most countries measure goods, shipping, and personal weight in kilograms, even where customary units persist.
Ounce
Overview
An ounce (oz) is a mass unit in the Imperial and U.S. customary systems. The international avoirdupois ounce is exactly 28.349523125 g—one-sixteenth of an avoirdupois pound.
Orígenes
“Ounce” derives from Latin uncia (“twelfth part”). In ancient Rome, a standard copper bar defining the pound and the foot was divided into twelve unciae. Over time, regional “ounces” varied—Dutch (~100 g), French (~30.59 g), Spanish (~28.75 g)—until the modern 28.3495 g definition was fixed in 1959.
Uso moderno
In the U.S., ounces remain the norm for packaged foods, recipe ingredients, postal items, and more. Although the U.K. has officially metricated, ounces still appear in restaurant menus and specialty retail.
