Gram

Definition

A gram (symbol: g) is an SI unit of mass equal to one-thousandth of a kilogram, the SI’s base mass unit. Since 2019, the kilogram—and thus the gram—is defined by fixing Planck’s constant (h = 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s), eliminating dependence on a physical prototype.

Background

Originally, a gram was conceptualized as the mass of one cubic centimetre of pure water at 4 °C. It formed part of the older CGS (centimetre-gram-second) system until SI redefined the gram simply as 0.001 kg.

Moderne Nutzung

Grams are ubiquitous in kitchen measurements, nutrition labeling (values per 100 g), scientific labs, and retail packaging around the world.

Pound

Definition

A pound (symbol: lb) is a mass unit in the Imperial and U.S. customary systems. The international avoirdupois pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg and divides into 16 avoirdupois ounces.

Background

Deriving its name from the Roman libra, the pound underwent many local variations until the 13th-century adoption of the avoirdupois system standardized it at 16 ounces—a choice driven by the ease of dividing 16 by 2, 4, and 8. This definition was internationally ratified in 1959.

Moderne Nutzung

In the U.S., pounds remain standard for body weight, groceries, and postal items. In the U.K., metric units are official, but pounds still appear on food labels and in personal-weight references (often alongside stones, where 1 stone = 14 lb).
