Convert pounds to grams
Pound
What Is a Pound?
The pound (symbol: lb) is a traditional mass unit in both the British Imperial and U.S. customary measurement systems. The modern international avoirdupois pound is precisely defined as 0.45359237 kg and splits into 16 ounces for easy fractional use.
Origins
Its name comes from the Roman libra. During the Middle Ages, various local “pounds” existed until the 13th-century adoption of the avoirdupois system standardized it at 16 ounces—a choice guided by the fact that 16 divides evenly by 2, 4, and 8. The current definition was internationally agreed upon in 1959.
Where It’s Used Today
In the United States, pounds are the go-to unit for body weight, grocery items, and everyday weighing. Although the UK officially uses metric units, pounds still appear on food packaging and alongside stones (1 stone = 14 lb) when people describe body weight.
Gram
What Is a Gram?
A gram (symbol: g) is the SI unit of mass equal to one-thousandth of a kilogram, the SI’s base mass unit. Since May 2019, the kilogram—and therefore the gram—is tied to a fixed value of Planck’s constant, ensuring it remains artifact-free and exact.
Origins
Originally, a gram was conceived as the mass of one cubic centimetre of pure water at its melting point. It belonged to the older CGS (centimetre-gram-second) system until SI reclassified it simply as 0.001 kg.
Where It’s Used Today
Grams are fundamental in cooking (recipe ingredients), nutrition labels (per 100 g), laboratory measurements, and retail packaging around the globe.
