Its name comes from the Roman libra. Where It’s Used Today

A gram (symbol: g) is the SI unit of mass equal to one-thousandth of a kilogram, the SI’s base mass unit. Since May 2019, the kilogram—and therefore the gram—is tied to a fixed value of Planck’s constant, ensuring it remains artifact-free and exact.

Origins
Originally, a gram was conceived as the mass of one cubic centimetre of pure water at its melting point. It belonged to the older CGS (centimetre-gram-second) system until SI reclassified it simply as 0.001 kg.

Grams are fundamental in cooking (recipe ingredients), nutrition labels (per 100 g), laboratory measurements, and retail packaging around the globe.
